Weekend Update – March 2012

Since last months miles were well below average I have made more of an effort to get on the bike in the past few days. I have realized that when I’m not on my bike as much, I do not have as many interesting stories to tell.

This weekend I was able to ride over 50 miles on the road bike. Tomorrow and Wednesday I plan to put more miles than that on my single speed 29er!

On my SS 29er I recently added a new SRAM SS chain and Surly Tuggnut with bottle opener!

More upgrades coming soon!

A Bike Built for Two (a post by the other half of Dillon Bikes)

When Matt and I started dating, I knew a bike was part of the package, but at that time his bike was something that had an engine and required gas.  I didn’t know what kind of bike I was really getting into until after the last name on my driver’s license changed (but to be fair, when you marry someone 8 months after meeting them, not everything is discovered before the wedding). I wasn’t all that disappointed to be trading a crotch rocket for a Specialized, because after all, everyone knows that only Harleys are real bikes.

I inherited the love of bicycling from my dad. There are so many memoires of him, all geared up in his cycling clothes, going out for a ride. Us kids were included in everything my dad did, so a tandem bike soon made an appearance in our driveway. Every sunny Sunday afternoon, Dad and I would put on our bright yellow reflective vests and pedal off around town. A tandem bike was the greatest thing on earth to little 8 year old me. I’d pedal when it was fun to (i.e. going down hills and being on flat roads) and then when the hard part would kick in, I’d cross my skinny little legs and prop them up on my handlebars. Oh, the life. I remember dad looking back at me and chuckling to see my feet propped up. He would always say “No wonder it was getting so hard to pedal!”, and I’d giggle.

We’d always stop for a treat at the gas station halfway through our ride, which was the highlight for me.  Unlike mom, who liked healthy treats for her kids, dad would let me get anything- even brightly artificially colored juice. It didn’t get better than that.

Not too many years would pass before “Dad” became a two-syllable word in my pre-teen vocabulary and I insisted on my own bike. Funny to look back now and think the tandem bike was embarrassing, when I’m sure my pink cargo shorts, frizzy permed hair and scrunchie did little to help my cause.

My own bike soon turned into my own car, and Sunday afternoon bike riding became a thing of the past.

Meeting Matt and rediscovering that love of biking buried inside my grown up 27 year old heart is a pretty neat gift. There are days on rides when I just want to put my legs up on the handlebars and let someone else do all the work, but now I know the joy of not just the easy parts, but the thrill of conquering the hard parts too, (Although, I still wouldn’t mind some brightly colored juice halfway through).

Ride Report: 1.28.12

Today I pedaled 52.5 miles on my rigid SS 29er! My longest ride on a mountain bike to date. Also the farthest I had ridden this bike before today was 8 miles.

Isn’t she beautiful!

San Lee

A few weeks ago I received an invitation to join the Cape Fear SORBA mountain bike group for a ride at San Lee Park in Sanford, NC. This past weekend, we all drove to Sanford and it was great to see how many riders showed up!  This group is based in Wilmington, NC, about a 2 hour drive for them.

I had previously only ridden half of the San Lee trails. I had an idea of what the trails were like but they have recently added 3-4 miles of trail. The total mileage of the trail is now around 12 miles.

One section of trail is called “The Gauntlet”. This was my favorite section of trail. It was 1-2 miles of intense rock garden!  I don’t think there was not one person in our group who didn’t hit the ground at least once. If you took your attention off of what was happening for a split second you would risk being thrown over the handlebars.

I would like to thank the Wilmington SORBA group for inviting me to join them for an awesome time on the trails Saturday. I’ve been hearing some good things about the trails they have been creating down there. I look forward to a chance to take a ride on their trails. From what I hear they are worth the drive!

Pub Crawl

I received an email from a friend of mine last week with the subject line “Pub Crawl on 2 Wheels”. Instantly I was hooked and ready for a great ride! The details were to ride 64 miles, stopping at a micro brewery every 15 miles or so. Not only did a 64 mile ride with 60 degree weather sound awesome, there was multiple beer stops included!

In December it is normally tough to get one or two other people to ride with you. When you include beer you get 7!

It was a great ride and I could tell a big difference in how I rode after each stop. I do not know the science behind it but beer helped me pedal a little faster.

Goals Update – November

My plan for November was to kick butt on both the mountain bike and road bike. I thought it would be awesome if I could double my needed miles for the month. Unfortunately, on my first mountain bike ride for November, I flew over the handle bars and landed on my right shoulder. It took a few weeks to heal but I was able to mountain bike ride this previous Sunday. As long as I don’t injure myself again I plan to be on the saddle a lot more this month to make up for November.

The weather here at the Dillon Bikes World Headquarters has been perfect for cycling.

Monthly Mileage Needed
Road Bike: 208 miles
Mountain: 83 miles

Miles Accomplish in November
Road Bike: 264  :-)
Mountain Bike: 40  :-(

Total Miles Ridden Since September 2011
Road: 664
Mountain: 222

I am looking forward to the month of December! I have a couple of long rides planned and all of my winter cycling gear is in the closet ready to go.

Until next time….

Riding with Friends

Since starting Dillon Bikes my life has changed completely.

I started Dillon Bikes as a way to earn extra cash on the side as well as to create a way for me to be more involved in the cycling community. Dillon Bikes has come a long way since I posted my first advertisement on Craigslist a year and a half ago.

I work on bikes in the evenings and weekends when I’m not riding or spending quality time with my wife. I love to go into the shop, turn on my music, and wrench on bikes for a couple of hours. I enjoy diagnosing a bikes problems, and then begin fixing those problems one by one.

More than fixing bikes I love meeting new people and developing friendships with my customers. It is great to meet new people each and every week. I’ve also had the opportunity to go on road and mountain bike rides with some of my new friends.

The new Dillon Bikes website was developed and built by a customer who came into my shop one day looking to buy a bike. Now we are friends who ride road bikes together and talk on a regular basis about websites, cycling, and family.  There are many other amazing, and intelligent people I have meet through Dillon Bikes. I am honored to be able to call them my friends!

Friday morning rides is just one example of spending time with great friends I’ve made through Dillon Bikes.

Trail Side Repair

On Saturday I posted the picture below on the Dillon Bikes Facebook page with the caption ”I had to ride my bike for 20+ miles in this condition”. As you can see I am missing my rear derailleur, and my bike has been converted to a single speed.
As our group was stopping for a break I heard something crack on my bike. I looked down and my rear derailleur was upside down and twisted up above my chain stay.  I took a closer look and there was a small stick lodged between both of my jockey wheels. The small stick had snapped my derailleur hanger in two. I was amazed at how such a small stick, at a really slow speed could do so much damage!
When this happened I was with a group of 6 guys and we were only 3 miles into our ride with 20+ miles to go. I had waited all week for this ride and there was no way I was going to quit now. I threw out the idea that I was going to make my bike run as a single speed. Once I found a gear ratio I was happy with I broke my chain and linked it back together with my spare SRAM powerlink. To help keep the chain from skipping down the cassette I locked out the rear shock. I made sure to take a lap and test out my trail side conversion. The gearing worked out well for the trail we were on. I had a few issues with the chain popping off when we would climb hills, but other than that I was very pleased with how the bike responded.
I have replaced the derailleur hanger, and now have a spare in my camelback in case this ever happens again.

Today I will leave you with inspiration to get out and hit the trails this week!
