Motorized Trike – Finished!

A few weeks ago I posted that I was working on a trike. After getting past the learning cure of trying something new, this trike was a lot of fun to work on. With the added motor built into the front wheel this ride has some get up and go! I heard from the owner that its hard to keep peddling when you can use it as a scooter.

One of the cool features that comes with the motor system is the computer. This tells you how much juice the battery has, the riders speed, and the distance traveled. I’m sure it does a lot more but I didn’t take the time to figure it out. The speed of the motor is controlled by a knob which acts a lot like a barrel shifter. The gearing on the bike is 3×9. It had rim brakes on the front and disk in the rear.

I did run into problems when it came to the motor controller (shown below). When I connected all the wires the motor controller immediately began to smoke! After double and triple checking all of the wires I connected the controller again. It still started to smoke each time. I contacted the company who supplied all the parts. They were very kind and asked me to mail the old controller to them and they quickly sent me another motor controller. Thankfully they tested the one I originally had and said it was defective before I got it (I was worried it was my fault).

I installed the new motor controller and everything worked perfectly!

Trek Superfly Pro and Soho Deluxe

Trek Superfly Pro and Soho Deluxe

One for going fast, and one for going slow

This article originally appeared on BikeRadar

We tested the 2011 Trek Superfly Elite last year and found a lot to like, including impressively low weight, a stout backbone, superb handling, and good ride characteristics. The 2012 Superfly Pro, however, expands on what was good, fixes a few niggles we found with the previous version, and moves even further upscale for what we expect to be a cross-country rocketship.

The frame is mostly carried over – which in this case is a good thing – with the exception of Trek’s OCLV Mountain and Carbon Armor technologies for improved impact resistance. Nearly 100 percent carbon construction keeps the weight to a not-too-low 1,340g for our medium tester while the otherwise identically puffed-up tube diameters and tapered front end should yield the same sharp handling and pedal responsiveness as before.

Both the headset and bottom bracket bearing seats are molded right into the carbon structure – saving weight but also minimizing complexity – and while the dropouts are carbon, too, bolt-on aluminum plates are used for better long-term durability and easy replacement if needed.

This year’s Superfly Elite switches from the SRAM X0 of our old tester to a Shimano Deore XT package but our new Pro model goes all-in with a SRAM XX group, which helps bring the total weight of our tester to a paltry 9.66kg (21.30lb) – and once we convert it to tubeless, that figure will drop even further.

Trek Slash 9 – Review

Note from Dillon Bikes: I have been searching the web to find cycling news and products so I can bring you the best of the best.

Review from BikeRadar.com

Trek’s Slash all-round enduro bike is a replacement for the short-lived Scratch Air and uses most of the company’s latest tech tricks. The control delivered by the rear end, plus a host of neat features and the beautifully balanced, tight but light-enough frame, make it one of the bikes to beat in 2012.

Goals Update – September

I have been anticipating this blog post all month. I could not wait to share with all of you how many miles I peddled over the month of September. It has been a great month and the weather has been very kind to us cyclists. I would like to thank all of you who helped me push through the miles and helped me get closer to accomplishing my goals.

If you are new to Dillon Bikes: On September 1st I set goals I wanted to accomplish over the next 12 months.

To recap, here are the goals I set:
Mountain Biking: (By September 1, 2012)
-Ride 1,000 miles
-Race in a minimum of 5 races
-One race has to be at least a 6 hour endurance race
-Ride at night twice

Road Biking: (By September 1, 2012)
-Ride 2,500 miles
-Ride in 3 or more charity rides

What needs to happen to ride this many miles:
-Mountain: 83 miles per month for 12 months
-Road: 208 miles per month for 12 months (WOW I should have done the math earlier!)
-6 hour race: I will be signing up to ride in the 6BC race that is on November 12th

Lets see how I did for the month of September…..
Mountain: 91 miles

Road: 190 Miles

Over all I think I did well. I road more miles than necessary on the mountain bike but I didn’t quite make it to the amount of miles I needed for the road bike.

I am excited about the month of October’s riding! The fall weather has come our way and with this cooler weather has come an even stronger desire to be in the saddle as much as possible. I have a couple long rides planned along with mid week rides to help get me through the work week.

 Until October’s mileage update…

Volagi – Yes Please!

Volagi revealed their road bike with hydraulic disk brakes! I am ready for this technology to trickle down to the lower end bikes so I can go purchase a new road bike in the next year or two. The bike shown is also equipped with Dura ace Di2 electric derailleurs!
